The challenge:
The noted playwright and novelist, Oscar Wilde was world-famous but many Irish people may not know his mother, Jane, Lady Wilde.
Lady Wilde was the embodiment of a challenger in 1800s Ireland - an Irish nationalist, feminist, multilinguist, translator and staunch advocate of women’s rights in the 19th century. Lady Wilde was also a renowned Poet, writing under the pen name of Speranza. In celebration of International Women’s Day 2021, and with particular regard to the theme - #ChooseToChallenge – An Post created & launched a new specially commissioned stamp celebrating the life & legacy of Jane, Lady Wilde.
Our ask was to deliver a campaign that would shine a light on Jane, tell her story and explain her role as a leading Irish feminist who always chose to challenge.
The solution:
We wanted to not only celebrate Lady Wilde and her role in our Nation’s history, we also wanted to celebrate the women of Ireland today. Women who were breaking boundaries and challenging conventions. To do that, a content series that would live on the An Post website, featuring inspirational women in Ireland.
Three pieces were created. The first featuring columnist and author Martin Devlin, a regarded authority on Speranza, who spoke of her life, achievements, and the mischief she was so famous for creating. The second was with Dr. Norah Patten, Aeronautical Engineer and Citizen Scientist Astronaut Candidate on her work and ambition to be the first Irish astronaut. The final piece in the series was a musical performance by Irish / Somalian artist Loah. She composed a piece of music to compliment the poem your World written in the 1920’s by Georgia Douglas Johnson who was part of the Harlem Renaissance.
